Commemoration of D-Day: 6th June 2024
This commemoration has been planned by The Normandy Memorial Trust, The Royal Naval Association, ABF The Soldiers Charity, RAF Benevolent Fund & The Merchant Navy Association.
Why we remember
In commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day, we pay homage to the resilience and fortitude of the British veterans who played a crucial role in this pivotal moment of the Second World War. The invasion claimed the lives of thousands of allied soldiers. These brave men - many just teenagers - left their families and their futures behind to liberate Western Europe from the grip of the Nazis. We must remember the sacrifices they made.
As part of the D-Day 80 Beacons there needed to be a way for everyoneto get involved. Potto Parish Council & Potto Village Hall Management Committee are proposing that on the evening of 6th June this year we all light a lamp on our front lawns or gardens by 9.15pm to show our support for all of those who died during this campaign - whether on land or at sea - man or woman and also to commemorate those who came back injured - both physically and mentally. This will also commemorate all of the animals who died in service - they had no choice but to serve!
Then why not take a walk around the village to look at them all?
On Saturday 22nd June it is proposed that we all bring our lanterns (be they the official ones or the lamp you have used) to the Summer Solstice event at the Village Hall - where we can light them all up and reflect on the 'light of peace'.

There are many ways that this event is being commemorated: Walking with the Wounded are scaling the highest mountains in the country to light beacons at the top and some others are travelling to the D-Day Beaches. More information is on the D-Day 80 Beacons official website. One of the simplest ways is the Lamp Light of Peace. Fish & Chip Shops are also encouraged to light the lamp too!
The "Lamp Light Of Peace" is a traditional Oil Lantern. It's Ruby Red colouring represents the ultimate sacrifice made by brave men and women across the globe.
The light from the flame will represent the ‘light of peace’ that emerged from the darkness of war.
The lamp provides a simple and safe way of taking part in this important 80th anniversary occasion.
We encourage participants to cherish their lamps and light them again at 11am on every Remembrance Sunday thereafter, in tribute to the many millions that sacrificed their lives during WWII.

Participants are asked to light their Lamps at 9.15pm, coinciding with the lighting of the Beacons throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man that evening.
A guide has been produced with more information about how to participate and why we are doing this.
